Is the iPhone 15 Waterproof?

The iPhone 15 can withstand a lot, but it isn’t waterproof. While a single drop or dash of water probably won’t damage your iPhone, you probably shouldn’t take it for a swim. It’s important to understand that being water-resistant isn’t the same as being waterproof. Few things are truly waterproof, and if submerged for too long or even deep enough, water is likely to cause damage. So, for a little extra protection against water, we created the Frē Series.

What iPhones Are Waterproof or Water-Resistant?

Since the release of the iPhone 7, all iPhone models have had some degree of water resistance. The level of water resistance depends on the specific rating of that model. Phones are rated for water resistance and given an ingress protection (IP) rating.

These iPhone models have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 and can be submerged up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes:

  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max

The following iPhone model has a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 and can be submerged in up to 4 meters of water for up to 30 minutes:

  • iPhone 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max

These iPhone models have a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529. They can be submerged up to 2 meters for up to 30 minutes:

What to Do if Your iPhone Gets Wet

Sometimes, splashes and drops are unavoidable. If your iPhone 15 ends up somewhere a bit more damp than expected, the first step is to get it out of the water as quickly as possible. The longer your phone stays submerged, the more likely it is to have waterlogged circuits.

Remove Water

You want to remove as much liquid as possible from your phone. Try gently tapping your iPhone against your hand or on a towel with the charging port facing down.

Dry Off Your Device

Wipe off any excess water and let it air dry naturally for 48 hours. Avoid using a hair dryer or other heat source, as high temperatures could damage the phone further.

Absorb Moisture

Some may recommend immediately putting your phone in rice for approximately 24-48 hours. This has proven effective in most cases, allowing the rice to absorb the moisture from your device.

You can also try loosely wrapping it in a towel to help absorb any external moisture that may be present.

How to Waterproof (IP-68) Your iPhone

If you’re looking for a solution that lets you swim, shower or splash without setting down your phone, there are ways to help waterproof your device. Here are a few options for wet-weather and in-water iPhone use:

  • The best way to protect your iPhone during water activities is to slip on a FrÄ“ Series case.
  • Once your phone is secure in an OtterBox FrÄ“ series case, secure it in an armband for hands-free use.
  • A waterproof Drybox offers another option for protecting your phone in wet conditions.
  • If your phone isn’t fully protected with a waterproof (IP-68) case or Drybox, keep it stored in a dry area and make sure your hands are completely dry before using it.
