How to Get Air Bubbles Out of a Screen Protector

For many people, a phone is a multi-functional device that plays a crucial role in our daily lives. It serves as a constant lifeline connecting us to our loved ones and the outside world. Although the screens of modern smartphones are more advanced, they are still vulnerable to damage if dropped, which can result in scratching or shattering. A properly installed screen protector can significantly reduce this risk of damage and protect your phone in case of a fall.

However, if not applied properly, screen protectors can create unsightly air bubbles in between the film and the screen. These bubbles can then make it difficult to see your screen clearly, as well as reduce the sensitivity of the touch screen. Here are a few steps to learn how to get air bubbles out of your screen protector.

Preparing Your Device and the Screen Protector

Before you apply a screen protector without air bubbles, start with a clean slate. Little bits of dust and grease from your fingers or hair can prevent the screen protector from getting the perfect, crystal-clear seal across your display.

The OtterBox Mobile Device Care Kit comes with everything you need, including a microfiber cloth to prevent the transfer of lint when drying the screen, 70% alcohol cleaning strips, and screen brushes.

Step 1: Spritz the screen with rubbing alcohol or eyeglass cleaner, or grab an alcohol-based screen cleaning strip.

Step 2: Thoroughly clean the screen, ensuring there are no smudges or grime stuck to it.

Step 3: Use a microfiber cloth to dry the screen. Make sure it’s microfiber, as this won’t damage the screen or transfer any lint.

The Art of Applying the Screen Protector

Applying the screen protector is simple once you’re prepared. You’ll need:

  • New screen protector (ideally still in packaging)
  • Credit card (some screen protectors come with an applicator tool that works as well)

As a word of caution, be careful with your screen protector when you remove it from the packaging. Hold it from the edges as soon as the adhesive is exposed since dust or grime are difficult to remove and cause bubbles.

Step 1: Carefully align the screen protector with the screen, paying attention to the openings for the microphone and camera.

Step 2: Starting from the top of the phone, carefully start applying the protector to the clean screen. Work slowly and evenly, gently but firmly pressing it to the screen to avoid major bubbles.

Step 3: Check the fit of the screen protector. If there are any bubbles, use a credit card or applicator tool to coax them out the side. Most bubbles, if caused just by some trapped air, should come free.

Addressing Air Bubbles: A Quick Troubleshooting Guide

Air bubbles trapped under screen protectors typically come from one or more of the following causes:

  • The screen protector was applied incorrectly.
  • Dust or something else was left between the screen and the protector.
  • You used a low-quality screen protector that didn't have an effective adhesive.
  • The screen protector doesn't fit your phone.

Most of these issues can be avoided by using a clean surface and following the product's installation instructions or by selecting the correct screen protector. If you have bubbles, however, you should push them out with a credit card or a screen protector applicator. Align the card with the bubbles, and gently push them toward the edge of the screen.

Troubleshooting Persistent Bubbles

An improper installation may cause persistent bubbles, and you might need to start the application process all over. You’ll need:

  • Hair dryer or heat gun
  • Credit card or applicator tool

Step 1: Use your heat gun or hair dryer on the lowest setting. Hold it around 6 inches from the screen, and be sure to move the nozzle so you don’t keep the heat in one spot for too long.

Step 2: After about 15 seconds, try to pry the screen protector off at the corners with the credit card. If it doesn’t come away easily, try warming the screen for a little bit longer before attempting to remove it again.

Step 3: Once the screen is off, inspect it for any obvious causes of bubbles (dirt, hair, or other debris). Remove anything stuck to the adhesive.

Step 4: Start the application process again.

Maintaining a Bubble-Free Screen Protector

Once your screen protector has been applied without air bubbles, the best way to maintain it is to avoid damaging the adhesive. Leave the edges alone, and use a properly fitting phone case to ensure it stays in place. Clean it regularly with rubbing alcohol or screen cleaning wipes.
